Organic does a body good.
All Organic Babies
When I was pregnant with my first child, I knew that I wanted to keep living my organic and eco-friendly lifestyle. I was intent on using disposable diapers, making organic baby food, and making sure that my little one was in organic clothing. I realized that while to me and my husband these ideas made sense, friends and family were baffled and unsure of what to get us for showers. Now, I am pregnant with baby number three and everyone knows that if they want to give something they can give gift cards or money. We are still doing the green baby thing, and honestly it was difficult at first, but now it is such a habit that we like to think it’s even easier than not being green.
One decision that many mothers cannot believe I made was to go with cloth diapers over disposable ones. For me there was no question really. I knew the cost of disposable diapers on me and my family, and I also knew the toll that they can take on our environment. Disposable diapers can cost a family close to $500 for a year, while cloth diapers will only cost around $100 a year. Disposable diapers can live in landfills for many years until they start to break down. This is even true for the more eco-friendly disposable diapers. Cloth diapers, if washed in full loads with proper measurements and such will have no increased impact on the environment. The convenience of disposable diapers may win you over, but there are things like diaper rash you should consider. Also, cloth diapers tend to lead to earlier potty training, another factor to consider.
Organic baby food was another decision that I made to make sure that my baby was getting the absolute best nutrition and the family was being green. Looking back I am so glad that I chose to go the way of organic when it came to the food for our children. Certified organic foods have to be free from antibiotics, animal hormones, genetically modified organisms, and much more. On top of being free from those things, organic food is created in such a way that the environment is protected during the process. It is becoming much easier to find and buy organic baby food now. You can even have it shipped straight to your home. I also like to make my own baby food out of organic produce that we buy locally at the farmer’s market. It makes great food and it supports the community.
Planning for a baby comes with many decisions, but if you want to be sure that you are living an organic life even with your children, it is very possible.
